World Breastfeeding Week is August 1-7 and this year's theme is perfect for celebrating in your community. The 2007 World Breastfeeding Week theme from WABA (World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action) is "Breastfeeding: The 1st Hour--Save ONE million babies!" Recognizing the importance of keeping mother and baby together right from birth in order to facilitate breastfeeding success, the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) chose the central message "Welcome Baby Softly" for their World Breastfeeding Week kit to focus on practical ways to protect the environment into which babies are born.
ILCA's kit highlights how babies use all five senses to learn about their mothers and their world right from birth. Families and healthcare providers can all work to welcome babies softly during this important early time together through skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding in the first hour or so after birth. You'll find plenty of resources on ILCA's website to help you as you plan your World Breastfeeding Week celebration--certificates, proclamations, press releases, display ideas, crib cards, as well as information on how to welcome babies softly and promotional items to share with colleagues. For more info on World Breastfeeding Week, check out ILCA's website, www.ilca.org. |
